PhotoImage 21 was established a little over two years ago. It
grew out of the long established Wednesday Group which for twenty-one
years provided a forum for photographers in Leicester and Leicestershire.
The group aims to expand opportunities for local photographers
by promoting creative ideas through constructive discussion and
the open exchange of approaches to image making.
The group welcomes photographers of different backgrounds and
experience, whether well versed in photography or complete newcomers
starting out and whether working in film or digital media. The
emphasis is on visual ideas and the way in which photography provides
a means of expressing viewpoints and creating meaningful images
of the world. It is a group that places importance on mutual support,
the exchange of ideas, individual development, experiment and innovation.
The approach is completely democratic and all members have their
say in regular discussions of each other’s work. Such
discussion provides a framework for individuals to assess their
own work and outlook and make supportive criticism of each other’s photography.
The focus is less upon technology but rather upon the photograph,
its expressive and aesthetic merits and the message conveyed. The
group is positively non- competitive , there are no competitions
or prizes but rather a sharing of viewpoints. It is a group that
feels that working closely together as photographers and learning
from each other is of primary importance in developing ideas and
in creating exciting imagery.
Building upon the traditions of the Wednesday Group, PhotoImage21
arranges group exhibitions of member’s photography, group
projects, visits and shoots and educational courses as well as
regular presentations on a wide range of photographic topics.
PhotoImage21 meets every six weeks in Wigston on the outskirts
of Leicester and is keen to attract new members. If you feel that
you would like to participate in PhotoImage21 in developing a critical
and creative approach to your work and having the opportunity to
work with other photographers, you will find a warm and friendly
welcome. Anyone interested can simply attend a couple of
our meetings to discover if it is for them.
