My
career as an art historian has always involved photography
largely as a means of factual recording. Alongside this I have
had a fascination with cities and the people who live and work
in them. I feel a compulsion to record the flux of the city
and the chance, unexpected encounters with the ordinary that
become in turn extraordinary fragments of life. In this respect
I am influenced by the idea of the nineteenth century ‘flaneur’,
surrealism and the corpus of twentieth century street photographers.
On the whole my approach is not that of the posed picture but
of the stolen moment, extracted from reality and transposed
into the frozen, still image. |

I inherited an interest in photography from my father with a
plate camera, progressing through Brownie Box, Twin Lens Reflex,
35mm SLR to DSLR today.
Topics to start with were the usual family and holiday snaps!
Plus record shots of events.
Nowadays, I am more likely to take photographs with a theme;
a development since joining the PhotoImage21 group, which I thoroughly
enjoy.
My background is in Textiles but this has never influenced my photography
except for a few photographs of garments for brochures. |

I have lived in Leicester for 28 years, having originated from
Essex. I work in Leicester as a social worker.
I first became interested in photography at the age of 15 when
I was given a Pentax SV as a Christmas present. I have always
enjoyed taking portraits but more recently have discovered an
interest in rural and urban landscape.
I joined PhotoImage 21 as a result of my rekindled interest in
photography. Some of my work is exhibited in the Ale Loft above
the Barley Mow in Granby Street, Leicester |

Bob graduated from Nene University College
with an honours degree in Graphic Communication and a postgraduate diploma
in Visual Communication from UCE, Birmingham.
Photography had
been a passion for many years .. originally in taking and developing
B&W images but he then switching to digital
photography in the late 1990’s. This has enabled him to respond
to a wider range of subjects … images which work in colour
often don’t work in black and white and vice versa. Colour
photography and digital manipulation has provided a whole new dimension
to his work enabling him to respond in various ways to the natural
environment … a sense of beauty being just one of
them.

After a long break from photography I now find myself with a
new enthusiasm for creating images. One of my main interests
is in digital imagery and the diverse effects that can be obtained
by combining multiple images together.
I’m still experimenting with styles and genres; equine photography
is and always has been a very rewarding subject for me. More recently
I have been taking studio portraits, which is a new experience
for me, one that I have enjoyed immensely. In the future I hope
to increase my knowledge and experience in all fields of photography.
